You Hate To See The Utah Jazz's Season End Before It Even Started

Only time will tell how the history books reflect the David Stockton Era in Utah, and now that it has come to a close they’ll probably start with how the son ended up with the same amount of championships in Utah as his father. This news doesn’t mean it’s the end for Stockton, as he’s slated to continue his basketball career over in Europe with Medi Bayreuth in Germany. Slice it any way you want, getting paid to play basketball is still awesome, even though it will no longer be in the NBA.

But my question is, what exactly do the Jazz think they’re doing? Utah is coming off a great year, one that surprised pretty much everyone on the way to a 48-34 record and a game out of the 3 seed in a loaded West. They had what some Jazz fans might call a magical season, one in which they lost just two games from the third week of January all the way to mid March. They learned they had a breakout star in Donovan Mitchell, and enough talent on both ends to truly make some waves moving forward. One would think they would want to do everything they could to keep that all intact right? Well instead, they’ve done the unthinkable. They didn’t just cut the end of a bench guard who didn’t really have a spot in the rotation. They cut the son of the best player in their franchise’s history.

Why even chance messing with some bad karma? I’m to believe John Stockton isn’t going to put on some sort of voodoo spell on the Jazz as revenge for cutting his son? I know it doesn’t make total sense, but the Jazz should have been required to keep David on the roster as long as he wished simply out of respect. Looking up his contract, this was his financial commitment

now when you look at the Jazz depth chart, I get it, they’re a bit crowded at the guard position. They just drafted Grayson Allen and also have Mitchell/Rubio/Exum/Nato/Burks on the roster. Maybe they felt like they were doing Stockton a favor by cutting him loose and letting him actually play somewhere else, but what is the real difference between him and Nato? Practically the same production and close enough to the same age, I feel like the Stockton name should have held more weight.

So of the many storylines of the upcoming season, you bet your ass I’m going to be keeping an eye on how the UTA guards look. I’m not exactly sure what goes down in Utah, but I did see Big Love so I know things can get a little wacky. I was excited to see how the Jazz would back up their season from a year ago, but after seeing this news I’m nervous that only disaster is on the horizon.

Can you believe they cut this? Me neither, let’s hope they don’t regret it (they probably won’t).
